Why INTRON® A for Malignant Melanoma?

The only drug proven to improve survival in people with high-risk malignant melanoma

High-risk melanomas are tumors of the skin that have a high chance of coming back, or have spread to nearby lymph nodes. A tumor is considered a "high-risk" melanoma if:

  • it is more than 4 millimeters thick (approximately 1/6 of an inch)

OR

  • it has spread to the body tissue below the skin to a lymph node

INTRON® A is used to treat these high-risk melanomas within 8 weeks of surgery.

INTRON® A is the one and only FDA-approved treatment for high-risk malignant melanoma.

Research has shown that treatment with INTRON® A can help some patients with melanoma live longer.

INTRON® A is the one and only medication for people with high-risk malignant melanoma that has been shown to improve both:

  • relapse-free survival (living without the disease coming back)

and

  • overall survival

The majority of people taking INTRON® A are able to tolerate a full 52-week course of medication, with appropriate management by their doctor. This may include changes in dosing.

INTRON® A (Interferon alfa-2b, recombinant) for Injection is a treatment meant for melanoma patients 18 years of age or older, whose tumors have been surgically removed but are at high risk for coming back. INTRON® A must be used within 56 days (8 weeks) after surgery.

Injection
Use of a syringe and needle to push fluids or drugs into the body; often called a "shot."

Cancerous; cells that can invade and destroy nearby tissue and spread to other parts of the body.
Melanoma
A highly malignant type of skin cancer that arises in melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment. Melanoma usually begins in a mole.
