Look for the Positive

Scientists are studying whether a positive outlook can help people feel better or heal better.

Here are some ways to feel positive:

  • Focus on the fact that treatment is often successful and people can live for many years after finishing treatment.
  • Write down things that make you hopeful and talk about them.
  • Try to plan ahead; make your days as "normal" as possible.
  • Try to do the things you like to do, as much as you can.
  • Find hope in things larger than yourself - nature, great art, religious or spiritual beliefs.

Finding ways to feel encouraged does not mean:

  • denying your feelings, or
  • always pretending to be cheerful, even when you're not.

Everyone has "down" days. Be honest about your feelings. It's better for everyone. Also, if you feel sad and hopeless all of the time, this may be a sign of depression. Talk to your health care team - they have ways to help.
