Interleukins

Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is a protein that is produced naturally in your body. It plays an important role in "switching on" or activating the body's immune system to help you face illness. IL-2 switches on special defense cells called "T cells" and "natural killer" (NK) cells, to destroy germs or diseases.

Cell
The individual unit that makes up the tissues of the body. All living things are made up of one or more cells.
Immune system
The complex group of organs and cells that defends the body against infections and other diseases.
Interleukin
A biological response modifier (substance that can improve the body's natural response to infection and disease) that helps the immune system fight infection and cancer. These substances are normally produced by the body. They are also made in the laboratory for use in treating cancer and other diseases.
Interleukin-2 (IL-2)
An agent that stimulates the growth of specific types of white blood cells; used in cancer immunotherapy.
Protein
A molecule made up of amino acids that are needed for the body to function properly. Proteins are the basis of body structures such as skin and hair and of substances such as enzymes, cytokines, and antibodies.
