Focus on Melanoma

Melanoma is one of the most common kinds of cancer. The chance of getting melanoma increases with age, although it can affect people of all ages. It is the most serious of all types of skin cancer.

INTRON® A (Interferon alfa-2b, recombinant) for Injection is indicated as adjuvant to surgical treatment in patients 18 years of age or older with malignant melanoma who are free of disease but at high risk for systemic recurrence within 56 days of surgery.

Adjuvant
Treatment given in addition to the primary treatment to enhance the effectiveness of the primary treatment.
Cancer
A general term for more than 100 different diseases that involve the uncontrolled increase of abnormal new cells. These cells form tumors that can destroy surrounding tissue and spread throughout the body.
Injection
Use of a syringe and needle to push fluids or drugs into the body; often called a "shot."
Malignant
Cancerous; cells that can invade and destroy nearby tissue and spread to other parts of the body.
Melanoma
A highly malignant type of skin cancer that arises in melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment. Melanoma usually begins in a mole.
Recurrence
The reappearance of a cancer after a period of remission.
Systemic
Affecting the entire body.
