How do you deal with changes in taste or smell?

Be prepared for the fact that some foods may have a bitter or metallic taste, especially meat or other high-protein foods. Try these tips:

  • Use plastic utensils. Avoid metal utensils and silverware.
  • Choose and prepare foods that look and smell good to you.
  • If red meat tastes or smells strange, try chicken, turkey, eggs, dairy products, or mild-tasting fish instead.
  • Try new recipes or add new flavors to your favorites.
  • If cooking smells bother you, try cooking outside or on an enclosed porch.
  • Visit your dentist to rule out dental problems that may affect the taste or smell of food and ask about special mouthwashes.
